Tattooing—A Brief History
— The word tattoo is said to have two major origins:
1st, from the Polynesian word ‘ta’ which means “striking something”
2nd, from the Tahitian word ‘tatau’ which means “to mark something”
The history of this form of human body-art (decorative body modification) called “tattoo” began thousands of years ago and is as diverse as the people who wear them. These permanent designs—sometimes plain, sometimes elaborate, always personal—have served many functions: amulets, status symbols, declarations of love, signs of religious beliefs, adornments, and even forms of punishment.
In Japan the art of Tattooing may go back to the early stone-age, from 750,000 to 15,000 years ago. Other cultures have had their own tattoo customs, for example: pricking their skin on their hand to insert dyes.

Tattoo cover up idea?
hi people, a year ago got a tattoo on my right upper innerarm (get it?
), some kanji characters meaning “inner strength”, but lately when i start thinking about my tattoo im thinking more and more: in what way would i be able to cover it up?
this is because every time people ask me what my tattoo means i feel silly telling them the meaning cuz it seems such a cliche. this is a link to what exactly is tattoed: http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/1676/se… well today i got a cover up idea (i think its pretty brilliant): frame the kanji in a rectangle, turn some of the free space into realistic stars and other things that float in space, and turn whats left black. then i thought: maybe i can put some kinda gold painting style frame (baroque/rococo) around it? whadda ya think of my idea? dont hurt my feelings please haha!
