There are a boatload of factors that go into determining whether you end up with a result you are happy with or not when getting a tattoo. One of the issues that needs to be considered, but often is not, is the canvas for the tattoo.

Canvas? What canvas? Well, canvas is a nice way of saying YOU! In particular, we are talking about your body type and skin. Some tattoos look great on certain backgrounds and some do not. If you think through the process as applied to your body, you’ll get a far better result and avoid problems. Let’s consider an example.

I have a friend Mike. He has always loved the look of the Aztec clock. He finds it so appealing, he decided to get a full back tat using the design. The tattoo artist did a good job, but the overall effect is not all that great. Why? It has to do with his body type. We often joke that he is the “missing link.” Simply put, his family is a bit hairy. The tattoo design has some fine detail work, but everything is fuzzy because of his natural body hair. He’s not an ape, but it is a problem particularly since he surfs. For those of you that don’t surf, this means every hair on his body that is exposed to the sun is white. Since he can’t shave his back each day, the end result is not so hot. He probably would have been better off with a back tattoo.

What about skin color? Some tats look good on dark skin and some don’t. The problem is usually trying to get the detail work to appear. If the design incorporates many fine lines, the detail can often be lost in the natural skin color. The same goes for tattoos with color. A darker color may lose its luster when going on dark skin. To make the tat stand out, try to go with color contrasts.

Just so we are clear, dark skin is a general classification. A person who is in the sun all day, such as a construction worker, is going to have dark skin. So is an African-American and so on. The issue isn’t who you are, but whether you are going to get the result you like. Make sure to run the question by your tattoo artist so you don’t think you are going to end up with one thing and really get another.
